Let's Talk About Gel Polish

by - May 16, 2017

Hello Everyone!!!
In today's post I am seeking advice and your opinion about Gel Polishes. I have been doing nail art for a long time now but being said I am not aware about the all new nail products that came in market now and then. Frankly saying I didn't knew such thing as stamping plate, nail vinyl or thermal polish existed until two years back. The reason being its not available in my place and nail art is just being properly introduced here. Of course we have nail salon and all and there are limited to fantastic one stroke or freehand design.
I love doing  nail art but I am no Professional. Its never been more than a hobby or stress reliever. Yes!! Painting my nails makes me happy.  Recently I have been seeing tons of Gel polishes or mirror powder thingy all over my social media. So I would like to know more about it. I was wandering if you all could provide me some insight.
1. What is the difference between Normal polish and Gel polish? Beside the fact that Gel polish last for more than two weeks.
2. Why does it need cure it on UV lights? When the fact is UV lights could cause skin cancer if frequently exposed to it. Does the UV lights gives  metallic finish or does it helps to dry?
3. Can I use Gel polishes without curing in UV lights?
4. Do I need specific base product to use Gel Polishes?
5. I don't have UV Lights but I will decided whether to buy  one or not after reading all of your opinion. So If I decided to buy it what kind of should I buy? Is there any requirement or any products will work?
6. Is there a different method to remove gel polishes? Or acetone work just fine?
7. As you know recently I suffer from fungal infection and it occur now and then. Can I use Gel polish in such condition? Will it worsen the situation?
So these are the thing I am concern about. I am not saying you need to give the answer to all of the question but your opinion will help me to decide. If you have use gel polish I would love to hear your experience.Comment below and let me know what you think about Gel Polishes in general.
Thank you for reading.

  1. I like changing my polish often, so I am not very interested in gel polish, so I don't really know much about it :)

  2. I use gel polishes without UV lightning. They give more plump look.

  4. I change my mani too often to use gel polishes. I tried few ones without UV cure (Sally Hansen and Essence) - they are ok, but don`t expect wearing them for 2 weeks...

  5. I have used gel polishes in the past, but not anymore. Yes, you do need a UV light to cure them, as they will not get dry on their own without one. You should get a special gel base coat and top coat to go along with them, too.

Basically, there are two types of "gel" polish- the "gel-like" polishes that you don't use a light with; they are basically just like normal polish but with more flexibility. The other type is the "true" gel polish, that you must use a UV light with.

When I used them, I could never get them to last longer than a week. I'm not sure if I was doing something wrong, but I wasn't super satisfied with how long they lasted, especially since I felt they were more of a pain than other polishes.

Mostly, I hate the removal process. You have to soak your nails in acetone for 10 minutes, and then it kind of rubs off. But I don't like soaking my nails for that long, especially since my nails are sensitive and the process seems to be very drying to them.

The UV light/ gel process itself doesn't give a metallic look; just a highly glossy look. The metallic looks done with gel polish are just from the powder that you rub into them.

  6. Never used a gel polish. I only tried the 'gel-like' polishes and they seem the same to me, as normal polish :-)
